Marija Trandafil

Marija Trandafil (Novi Sad, 1816 — Novi Sad, 1883), a famous Serbian philanthropist who funded the construction of an orphanage and entrusted its administration to Matica Srpska. She founded a charitable trust to offer scholarships to poor talented students of the Novi Sad Grammar School. She helped poor people, students, poor married couples, widows and sick people, giving them clothes, firewood, food, textbooks. During the first Serbian-Turkish war in 1876, she chaired the committee for collecting aid to wounded Serbian soldiers.
